         The goal of the SpaceX inspired team was to evaluate and define what the experience might be like as an individual travels from Earth to Mars in efforts to colonize Mars based off Elon Musk’s Mars Colonial Transporter. We defined this experience as ‘Creature Comfort.’ We looked at many precedents in our research taking ideas from existing space ships to the concepts of Sci-Fi making sure to have a broad understanding of what space travel is today and what it could be tomorrow. In order to produce the ideal experience these key components were considered: first, we had to understand how many individuals will be on the journey, how much space is needed per individual, how can the livable space be expanded and compartmentalized for efficiency, how to keep the individuals occupied without developing negative side effect of confined spaces, and finally how to prepare these individuals for when they finally arrive to Mars to begin colonization. The result of our explorations coalesced into an architectural subdivision of space that helps to develop an image of a utopian space as colonizers adjust from their Earth residence and prepare to colonize Mars. Once launched, plants, trees, organisms all begin to grow with in these sub divided spaces to provide the essentials to life. Four different capsules nested under the space ship’s shell will house 25 individuals with each capsule equipped with all the amenities necessary to create a comfortable, yet self reliant colonizer. It was important to create a personal environment that prepares these individuals for the life ahead of them while keeping them content within a confined space for long period of time. The colonizers will only be provided with the labs and gardens necessary to cultivate, grow, and prepare their own food going against the idea of having a cafeteria where skills of survival are not developed. This will also help to provide a productive task that can be soothing, yet beneficial. Colonizers will have to be vegetarians in order to be as sustainable as possible and they will have to develop their understanding of the necessary skill sets to fix mechanical needs. Finally, inflatable spaces are created that expand once the shuttle has left the Earth’s atmosphere. This allows for an increase of space and new programs to be defined, such as work out spaces, tool development areas, and community spaces to make sure bond are created between the colonizers. The final product is an idea of how to create a self sustaining prepared colonizer through the spatial understanding of architecture.
